This is an introductory workshop designed for singers with minimum to no experience to practically learn about basic singing techniques. Background information about classical and musical theater singing will be given to the participants and a guided exploration vocal technique is planned as well. We will be working on an ensemble vocal piece; and for those who want to, we will be performing it for ourselves after rehearsing !

If time allows, there will be an opportunity to look at pieces participants would be interested in working on independently at the end of the workshop. This is not mandatory but is open. for any participants who are comfortable with doing this in front of others that attend the workshop.

Materials Needed

All materials will be provided but please feel free to bring a piece you've been working on if you'd like some help with it! Private help is also available outside of the workshop for participants who are interested.

Yiwen Wang

My name is Yiwen Wang and I am a Mezzo-Soprano graduated from the Bachelor of Music program at Queens University. During my undergraduate studies, guided by musical and especially classical singing experts, I was lucky enough to be able to dive deep into and strengthen my love in classical and musical theater singing.  Private voice lessons, essential musical and vocal courses as well as choral, opera, musical theatre and chamber music ensembles provided me with chances to explore varied music genres. I enjoyed all the opportunities to perform in shows of operatic, musical theatre scenes and in choral concerts. Outside of school, I was able to practice sacred vocal music by singing in the choirs of St. George’s Cathedral and St. Mary’s Cathedral choirs successively. I have also had experiences performing in plays and dance recitals. The completion of my Bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean the termination of my journey of music making. After graduating from Queen's, I continued to take voice lessons and to be a part of the St. Mary’s Cathedral choir. I also joined the Coro Spirito, the women’s choir for adults, of the Cantabile Choirs of Kingston to continue working on concert choral singing. Last but surely not least, I have started my very own online voice studio to be able to share what I learned in my degree to everyone who needs it. I can’t wait to see where my journey leads me as an emerging musician!
